HACEM FAQsWhat is HACEM? - The Ham And Computer Experimenters of Montevideo is an organization of technically minded experimenters dedicated to building, learning, and helping our fellow hobbyists. Why did you start HACEM? - I was frustrated by the lack of motivation with the last group I was associated with, as they never seemed to do anything. HACEM is different in that it is based on the Open Source credo. Members are expected to share their specialties and talents with other members. It is in this manner that HACEM will grow and become a useful asset to the community. Why should I join HACEM? - If you are interested in hi-tech communications, computer technology, or are just curious about Amateur Radio, then HACEM is for you. We can all prosper by bringing together a group of like minded individuals. I am just a beginner. What can I contribute? - EVERYONE has something to contribute, no matter what skill level they possess. Virtually everyone has access to the "great equalizer", the Internet. Pick a subject that interests you, research it, and share it with the other members. What if I do not have the time to participate? - Your "membership dues" to HACEM are paid by participation. If you do not participate, then you are not paying your dues. HACEM will only work if we all help each other. So how much time do I have to spend to pay "my dues"? - As much as you wish. It is based on the honor system. What I do not want to see is someone joining HACEM, asking for all sorts of help, and then not give back to the organization. I am not going to keep detailed records of such activity, but it does not take too long to figure out who is the "dead wood" in an organization. But do not be afraid to ask for help... After all, that is our mission! Are there any HACEM meetings or gatherings? - Formal meetings are not planned at this time. However, occasional meetings at a local coffee shop are not out of the question. It all depends on what the group would like to do. Since there are no meetings, how do we communicate with each other? - The same way that you are reading this FAQ! The Internet is a great way to communicate, especially for those of us that have crazy time schedules. Those of you that are Radio Amateur operators can also communicate using modes such as Packet, APRS, etc. The Internet is the lowest common denominator, so it will be the primary means of communications. |
